Prototype vs. Production: What's the Difference?

Your prototype proved your idea. Production proves your process.

​You know every inch of your prototype.

You remember the late nights. The design changes. The parts you ordered twice because the first ones didn't fit. The excitement of finally seeing it work.

Handing that prototype to a manufacturer can feel surprisingly emotional. After all, you've spent months—or maybe even years—bringing your idea to life. Now someone you've just met is asking for drawings, bills of materials, revision numbers, testing requirements, and documentation you didn't even know existed.

It can feel overwhelming.

If you've ever wondered, "Why do they need all of this?", you're not alone.

The good news is that none of these requests are meant to make your life harder. They're designed to help your product succeed. Let's talk about why.

​A Prototype and Production Have Different Jobs

One of the biggest misconceptions in manufacturing is that production is simply making more of the same thing.

It isn't.

A prototype has one purpose:
Does this idea work?

Production asks an entirely different question:
Can we build this the same way every single time?

That's why we often say:
A prototype proves your design.
Production proves your process.

​That single shift changes everything.

​Why Your Manufacturer Suddenly Needs So Much Information

"Why do manufacturers need drawings when I already have a prototype?"
Because prototypes rely on memory. Production relies on documentation. Six months from now, another assembler should be able to build your product exactly the same way—even if they've never seen it before. That's what engineering drawings make possible.

"Why do manufacturers need a Bill of Materials?"
Think of your Bill of Materials like a recipe. Every ingredient matters. If one component changes unexpectedly, your finished product may change too. A complete BOM helps ensure that cable number one and cable number one hundred are built with the same approved materials.

​"Why are revision numbers so important?"
Because products evolve. Without revision control, one customer could receive Version A while another receives Version B—and no one would know why. Revision control keeps everyone building from the same set of instructions.

​"Why do manufacturers test the assemblies?"
Testing isn't about assuming your product will fail. It's about giving you confidence that every finished assembly performs the way you intended before it reaches your customer.

​"Why do manufacturers create work instructions?"
Because consistency shouldn't depend on one person's memory. Good work instructions allow every trained assembler to build the product the same way, every time. That's how quality becomes repeatable.


​The Bridge in the Middle

Instead of thinking of production as "making more," imagine crossing a bridge.

On one side...
You're proving your idea.

On the other...
You're building a reliable manufacturing system.

​Between those two points are things like:
  • Engineering review
  • Design for Manufacturability (DFM)
  • Process development
  • Documentation
  • Quality planning
  • Team training
That's the bridge every successful product eventually crosses.

​It's Okay If You're Not Ready Yet

One of the biggest fears new product developers have is feeling like they're supposed to know all of this already.

You're not.

Every successful company had a first production run. Every experienced engineer once asked these same questions. A good manufacturing partner doesn't expect you to arrive with all the answers. They help you discover the questions you didn't know to ask.
